Speedcast has provided service for a logistics customer in Papua New Guinea throughout the pandemic, delivering controlled internet access for two COVID-19 quarantine barges housing mining personnel prior to their clearance to work on nearby Lihir Island. With the challenge of serving more than 500 cabins on each barge, Speedcast developed a custom solution to manage bandwidth and ensure uninterrupted connectivity for users. The tailored solution included low-latency MEO satellite service, microwave wireless to connect service to each barge and strategically positioned WiFi access points, enabling full coverage within the barges. Internet control was a critical part of the service to ensure each user obtained fair use of the internet, and specific control software was implemented to accomplish this. The result? Fully connected personnel, without requiring competition for bandwidth.
