Speedcast had been enabling one of the most innovative ships in the world to push the boundaries of discovery in Antarctic waters. As a technology partner to the long-standing customer, Speedcast was recently challenged to build a customized network interface and ruggedized system capable of withstanding the harshest Antarctic journeys imaginable.
That solution leverages our SIGMA network management platform, integrating Starlink, Iridium Certus and multiple wireless access points to enable a multi-WAN service for a critical mission on the ice. The connectivity is supporting a multi-week trek by a ten-person team traveling roughly 60-80 km per day to deliver equipment to an Antarctic site that is part of an important million-year ice-core drilling project.
