Rio de Janeiro, Brazil May 15, 2024 — Speedcast, a leading communications and IT services provider, is donating Starlink terminal kits and airtime to the government of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul to support disaster response and recovery in the wake of the region’s worst flooding in more than 80 years. Early this month, the region received a year’s worth of rain in a matter of hours, leading to fatalities, widespread landslides, and the collapse of a dam.

“Police, hospitals, the army and other local and state government departments are facing a massive challenge,” said Speedcast’s country manager for Brazil, André Gustavo Sant’Anna. “Quick-deploy connectivity solutions are critical following a natural disaster such as the one currently impacting the people of southern Brazil. It was important for us to put our disaster response communications expertise to good use and provide support to first-responder efforts underway, especially with our ability to quickly deploy Starlink services.”

During the 2023 wildfires in Hawaii, Speedcast outfitted a local crisis response team with hardware and connectivity, supplying dozens of Starlink kits in the wake of the natural disaster. The kits were mobilized in a single day and the team was up and running with critical connectivity in a matter of days, thanks to Speedcast’s immediate support.

Speedcast is the world’s leading authorized Starlink integrator, with more than 6,500 kits sold since adding the service to its connectivity toolkit at the end of 2022. Starlink’s high-capacity, low-cost service and automated, self-aligning terminals have made it a popular choice for disaster response, as well as bringing internet connectivity to mobile and remote sites. Last year, Speedcast introduced a new Rapid Deploy Kit for connectivity on-the-go and critical disaster response needs. The solution is custom-designed to host a Starlink Flat High Performance Kit and a network device, all conveniently packaged in a portable, airline checkable case, making it an ideal solution for on-the-go first responders or remote workers, as well as NGOs and Humanitarian Aid organizations.
